Anti-angiogenic therapy

Intravitreal anti-angiogenic therapy

Various agents can be injected into the eye to induce regression of abnormal blood vessels. These include agents that bind to Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), thereby neutralising it:

  • Bevacizumab (Avastin) - a humanised monoclonal antibody
  • Pegaptanib (Macugen) - a single strand of nucleic acid (aptamer)
  • Ranibizumab (Lucentis) - a monoclonal antibody fragment
