Astrocytic hamartoma

This is a benign, white tumour arising in the retina. It usually causes no problems so that no treatment is required. Rarely it can make the eye blind and/or painful because of haemorrhage or glaucoma (high intraocular pressure).

Usually, retinal astrocytic hamartoma occurs in association with tuberous sclerosis. This syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes epilepsy, learning difficulties and lesions in skin, heart and kidneys.
